The universal appeal of FC Barcelona brings fans from around the world to Camp Nou to see their heroes in action, and to do so when they are in the UEFA Champions League offers an additional thrill.

The Catalan giants are, of course, seasoned regulars in the competition, but it is worth noting just how long it took a club of their size to finally crack the code and win the tournament for the first time.

Having watched on as their arch-rivals Real Madrid won each of the first five editions of the tournament, FC Barcelona secured a place in the 1961 final, having knocked out Los Blancos en route, only to lose out to Benfica 3-2.

It took the team another twenty years to get to the final again, and this time, under England manager Terry Venables, they were expected to ease past Romanian side Steaua Bucharest, but they failed to break their stubborn defence, and after 120 goalless minutes, the tie went to penalties.

Barcelona proceeded to fail to score from all four of their penalties to give the win to Steaua.

In 1991/92, Johan Cruyff led Barca to the final again, this time against Serie A side Sampdoria, and a fine free-kick from Dutch sweeper Ronald Koeman finally ended their European Cup drought.

Two years later, they were humbled by AC Milan in another European Cup Final, losing 4-0 in Athens.

Their first title in the UEFA Champions League era came against Arsenal in 2005/06, with late goals from Samuel Eto’o and substitute Juliano Belletti earning Frank Rijkaard’s side a 2-1 win in Paris.

With Lionel Messi leading the line, FC Barcelona were about to get a whole lot more prolific in terms of their success in Europe. The Argentine magician played a key role in triumphs against Manchester United in both 2009 and 2011, as well as in 2014, when they made light work of Juventus.

The following nine years have been less than glorious, but with a stellar side like FC Barcelona, you can guarantee that silverware is only ever just around the corner.

Their visitors are European competition novices in comparison.

Union Berlin’s first European outing only came in 2001/02 and ended in a Second Round loss in the UEFA Cup.
