H.E.R Biography

Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson was born in June 1997 in Vallejo, California and raised in the San Francisco area. Her father was a cover band musician and her overall family has a history of musical talent.

By the age of ten, she put on a performance on the Today Show, where she played an Alicia Keys song, and she started her acting career at the age of nine, appearing on the Nickelodeon show School Gyrls.

At the age of 12, she competed on Radio Disney's The Next BIG Thing.

In 2010, she performed at the BET Awards and by 14 had signed a record deal with RCA Records. Her debut single, Something to Prove, was released under her real name before she switched to her H.E.R. alias.

In 2016 she released Focus, which proved a hit on the US Billboard charts and followed that up with Best Part, With Daniel Caesar. She worked with Dj Khalid on This Way and Could've Been with Bryson Tiller and fairly swiftly became an established act on the R&B scene.

She released her debut EP, H.E.R. Volume 1, in 2016, and I Used to Know Her: The Prelude, released in 2018, reached the top 20 on the US Billboard charts.

In 2020, H.E.R. performed Nothing Comares 2 U at the Primetime Emmy Awards, and the following year, she performed ahead of the Super Bowl. Her debut studio album, Back of My Mind, was released in 2021 and broke into the top ten of the US Billboard Albums charts and did well across Europe and the world.

In 2023, she starred in The Color Purple and garnered glowing reviews.

Though clearly in the early stages of what promises to be an epic career, H.E.R. has already achieved a great deal of critical acclaim. She won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for her track Fight For You, taken from the film Judas and the Black Messiah. In 2019 she won her first Grammy Awards, picking up the award for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album. That album featured the single Damage, which went on to top the US R&B radio chart.

In 2021, she won two more Grammy Awards, this time for Song of the Year (for I Can't Breathe) and Best R&B Song. In 2022, she won another Grammy, this one for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Among her heroes and a distinct influence on her career is the iconic musical legend Lauryn Hill. As an artist in her own right, it appears H.E.R. can do no wrong.
