Lauryn Hill Biography

Lauryn Noelle Hill was born in May 1975 in East Orange, New Jersey and came from a musical family background. She cites the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Marvin Gaye as strong early influences on her sound.

The Fugees

In high school, she met up with Prakazrel "Pras" Michel in relation to a musical collective he was forming and this began under the original band name Translator Crew. Wyclef Jean would soon join the lineup, and on the side, Lauryn Hill was developing her acting career.

The Score

The Fugees, as they were renamed, were signed to Columbia Records, and their debut album, Blunted on Reality, was only a moderate success. However, the band's second album, 1996's The Score, would go on to make the group one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Killing Me Softly

The record would become a critical and commercial smash hit. Selling over 20 million copies worldwide and topping the charts in many countries, including the United States. Hit singles from the release included the cover of Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly, Ready or Not and Fu-Gee-La. The group would soon disband with all three going on to forge successful solo careers.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

In 1998, Lauryn Hill released her acclaimed debut album as a solo artist, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which is still one of the best-selling albums of all time, more than a quarter of a century after its iconic release.

It sold more than ten million copies in the United States alone and spawned her number one single, Doo Wop, as well as Ex-Factor and Everything is Everything, two other big hits from the album.

Grammy Award Winner

In 1999, she would go on to win five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist; Lauryn Hill had already won two Grammys during her time in The Fugees.

The album would go on to be considered one that had had a great cultural impact and, to date, has not been followed up with another. On top of not releasing much in the way of new music, her live shows are infrequent and that means that when any new shows are scheduled, they are sold out in seconds.

After a long period away from the live scene, she returned to surprise many by playing at Coachella in 2024, joining her son YG Marley on stage.
