Macabbi Haifa have reached the Champions League group stages on a few occasions now and are undoubtedly the Israeli team most familiar to Champions League fans. Bag your Macabbi Haifa Champions League tickets with SeatPick's ticket aggregator.
Maccabi Haifa have a rich history in European competition, arguably the best among Israeli teams, and they have frequently secured surprise results against even the toughest opposition.
Their first involvement in continental action came in 1993/94 when they qualified for the UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup, but on that occasion, they were knocked out by Serie A outfit Parma on penalties after they had secured a late win away in Italy thanks to a solitary goal from Alon Mizrahi, who actually finished the campaign as joint top scorer in the competition.
In 1998/99, they produced a great run in the same competition to get to the Quarter-Finals, where they finally succumbed to Lokomotiv Moscow.
In 2002/03, they qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time and secured perhaps the greatest result in the history of the club. They lost their opening game to Manchester United 5-2 at Old Trafford but then beat Olympiakos 3-0 at home (albeit their European games were taking place in Cyprus at the time), with Yakubu scoring a hat-trick.
They then lost to Bayer Leverkusen before shocking the football world by beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United 3-0, with former Everton and Portsmouth forward Yakubu once again on target. It is worth noting that the Premier League side rested a number of players as they had already qualified for the next phase, but the win was nonetheless an impressive one.
They closed out their group with a 3-3 draw with Olympiakos.
In 2009/10, Maccabi Haifa returned to the UEFA Champions League group stage but, on this occasion, lost all six of their encounters, albeit they were against high-rollers Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Bordeaux.
2022/23 saw the club secure another UEFA Champions League group stage berth, but they managed just one win, albeit that came against Italian giants Juventus courtesy of two goals from Omer Atzili
Maccabi Haifa fans will be eagerly planning trips to see their side in UEFA Champions League action, especially if they come up against any of Europe’s elite away from home in the competition.
