Mya Biography

Mya Maris Harrison was born in October 1979 in Washington, D.C, and she started ballet classes at a young age before branching out into other dance forms, including tap and jazz. She began teaching kids to dance on BET's Teen Summit TV show.

Mya signed with Interscope Records in 1996 and released her self-titled debut album in 1998. The release broke into the Billboard 200 in the US and sold over one and a half million copies in the United States alone.

Singles from the album proved successful, especially It's All About Me (featuring Sisqo) and Movin' On (featuring Silk the Shocker). She was paired up with many stars who shared the Interscope Label with Mya, with the likes of Missy Elliott, Babyface, Diane Warren, and Dru Hill proving very helpful in getting her off the ground as an artist.

In 1998 she also featured on the hit track Ghetto Superstar along with Pras and Ol' Dirty Bastard.

Her second studio album, Fear of Flying, was a big hit and charted worldwide and in 2001 she featured on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack with her involvement in the global number one smash Lady Marmalade proving pivotal to her overall career.

She teamed up with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Pink on the huge hit. In 2003, her third album, Moodring, earned her a top three spot on the US Billboard charts and cemented her standing in the R&B/Pop/Hip Hop crossover genres.

Liberation (2007), Sugar & Spice (2008), K.I.S.S (2011), Smoove Jones (2016), and T.K.O (2018) followed. Though these never hit the same commercial heights as her earlier releases, she nonetheless retains a great reputation in the genre. Her live shows are always sold out long before she takes to the stage, which is a testament to her enduring popularity.

Mya has sold millions of records over the course of her career and picked up a number of prestigious accolades along the way. These include a Grammy Award, won in 2002 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, a MOBO for Best International Single for Ghetto Superstar in 1998 and two MTV Video Music Awards, won in 2001.
