Nils Lofgren Biography

Nils Hilmer Lofgren was born in Chicago, Illinois, in June 1951, and his musical talents were born at a very young age. By the age of five he was learning how to play a classical accordion and he went on to study classical music and jazz before making the switch to rock music with his efforts moving to playing piano and becoming a hugely gifted guitarist.

In 1968 he teamed up with George Daly and Bob Berberich to form the band Grin but soon moved on to play with Neil Young's Band Crazy Horse. He appeared in a host of Neil Young's most iconic works, from After the Gold Rush in 1970 to In Berlin in 1983 and Barn in 2021 (which earned him a Grammy Award nomination). He also appeared on his Unplugged album for MTV.

Indeed, he was still just 19 years of age when he performed on After the Gold Rush, a seminal album that is considered by many music critics to be among the best ever released.

In the mid-1980s, he moved to join Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in what was perhaps his most well-known work. He played on many Bruce Springsteen albums, including Tunnel of Love (1987), Blood Brothers (1996) and The Rising (2002). He also played live with the group extensively.

Throughout this period he was also producing acclaimed work as part of his solo career and the Nils Lofgren band. Among his many influences are the Rolling Stones and their lead guitarist Keith Richards, who was the subject of his song 'Keith Don't Go'.

His self-titled debut album, released in 1975, earned plaudits and was named by Rolling Stone as one of the best albums of that year. His live shows have always been incredibly entertaining, not least when, in the 1970s, he got into the habit of playing guitar while doing flips on a trampoline. It doesn't get much more rock and roll than that!

As well as his lengthy collaborations and solo career work, Nils Lofgren often pops up to perform with other monumental acts, such as with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. With Willie Nelson and Greg Varlotta.

In 2023, he released a new album with Mountains, proving a critical and commercial success and is evidence of his continued masterful musical prowess.
