Panathinaikos have a rich history in Europe’s premier tournament, the UEFA Champions League (and its predecessor, the European Cup).
The Athens-based side’s first involvement in the competition came back in 1960/61 when they were knocked out in the Second Round by Czech Republic side FC Hradec Králové. A decade later, the club secured their best-ever performance in the competition.
Under the guidance of legend Ferenc Puskas Panathinaikos defeated Everton and Red Star Belgrade, among a host of others, to set up a European Cup Final tie with the iconic Ajax side of the decade.
The European Cup Final took place at Wembley Stadium, with Ajax easing to victory thanks to goals from Dick van Dijk and Arie Haan ending Panathinaikos’s miraculous run. The club enjoyed another strong run in the competition in 1984/85.
They beat Feyenoord, Linfield, and IFK Goteborg before coming up against an all-conquering Liverpool side in the Semi-Finals.
An Ian Rush double and further goals from John Wark and Jim Beglin gave Liverpool a commanding 4-0 win at Anfield, and in the return leg, defender Mark Lawrenson scored the only goal to complete a 5-0 aggregate rout.
1995/96 saw Juan Ramon Rocha’s side perform admirably in the UEFA Champions League, as well as securing yet another domestic Greek title. Panathinaikos topped their group, and in the Quarter-Final, they took care of Legia Warsaw, winning 3-0 in the second leg with Polish ace, and club legend, Krzysztof Warzycha scoring twice to book a Semi-Final tie against Ajax.
Warzycha scored a famous goal in Amsterdam to give the Greek side an away win to take back for the return in Greece by a young Ajax side beat Panathinaikos 3-0 in the return, with Jari Litmanen scoring twice to knock out Rocha’s side.
In 2001/02, Panathinaikos once again made it to the knockout stages of the competition and even defeated FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Quarter-Final, only to then lose the return 3-1 at Camp Nou.
Since that run to the last eight, the club has struggled to make an impact in the competition but will hope to bring such a run to an end this time around.
If you are a Panathinaikos fan, you will no doubt be itching to see your heroes in action in the UEFA Champions League. The problem is, so will every other fan from around the world, and that’s a sizable number because the club is well supported globally.
