Serbia vs Portugal History

Under the guise of Yugoslavia, the Serbians essentially competed at the inaugural edition of the UEFA European Championship. Yugoslavia ended runners-up at this tournament in 1960 and once more in 1968.

Serbia and Montenegro progressed from the group stage at Euro 2000, but would then suffer a 6-1 thrashing by co-hosts Netherlands in the quarter-finals. As its own entity, however, Serbia wouldn't feature at the European Championship until the 2024 edition in Germany.

Portugal, on the other hand, have been almost ever-present at the Euro finals in recent times, particularly since around the turn of the 21st century. The Seleção debuted at the tournament in 1984 and reached the semi-finals, but lost out to hosts (and eventual winners) France, 3-2, in extra-time.

The Portuguese advanced to the semi-finals at Euro 2000 and went one step further four years later on home soil. The Seleção overcame England (on penalties) and the Netherlands to reach the final at Estádio da Luz, though the home side failed to beat underdogs Greece.

Portugal once again made it to the semi-finals in 2012, though defeat followed at the hands of eventual champions Spain. Finally, at Euro 2016, the Portuguese clinched European honours for the first time as they edged hosts France in front of 75,868 in Saint-Denis. Croatia, Poland and Wales all fell to the Seleção, before substitute Eder scored the winning goal in the second period of extra-time.

Serbia vs Portugal Head-to-Head

These two teams had met eight times prior to Euro 2024, though none of them had come at a major tournament. Portugal and Serbia clashed in qualifiers for Euro 2020, and previously ahead of the 2008 and 2016 editions as well.

Serbia claimed victory just once in their first eight meetings with the Portuguese, in a qualifier for the 2022 World Cup. Aleksandar Mitrović scored in the final minutes as the Serbians ran out 2-1 winners at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon.
