Slovakia vs Ukraine History

Slovakia made its outright debut at the European Championship in 2016 but had taken part in the maiden edition in 1960, as part of Czechoslovakia. The Soviet state was crowned champions of Europe in 1976, beating West Germany in the final, and also claimed the bronze medal four years later.

Following the dissolution at the end of 1992, Slovakia took more than two decades to qualify for the continental showpiece. Finally, the Sokoli (Falcons) took part in the 2016 tournament and even made it to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams. Slovakia would go on to lose 3-0 to Germany in the last-16. At Euro 2020, Slovakia won its opening game versus Poland but suffered losses to Sweden and Spain, eliminating Slovakia from the competition.

Euro 2012 was the first edition of the tournament to feature Ukraine, as the eastern European nation co-hosted the event together with Poland. Andriy Shevchenko gave the home side a dream start as he scored twice in a 2-1 win over Sweden at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv. Ultimately though, The Blue and Yellow failed to progress from the group following defeats against England and France.

Euro 2016 wasn't any better for the Ukrainians as they failed to score in any of their three group games, once again exiting at the group stage. The following edition was far more successful as the Ukraine national team progressed to the knockouts for the first time. Shevchenko was manager at the time and he inspired his charges to victory over Sweden in the Round of 16, with Artem Dovbyk netting the winner late in extra-time, however Ukraine then fell to England, 4-0, in the quarter-finals.

The first on-field meeting between these nations came in November 2002 as they played out a 1-1 draw. They later met in qualifiers for Euro 2016, in which Slovakia ran out 1-0 winners at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv.
