AEK Athens impressed greatly over the course of the group phase, during which they drew every single game, including two great results against Real Madrid. Sadly this was not enough to secure a place in the knockout phase but was a good measure of their standing in Europe at this point.

In 2006/07, again in the UEFA Champions League group stage, AEK Athens enjoyed strong home form. Fan favourite Nikolaos Liberopoulos scored the winner against Lille, and three weeks later, a goal from Julio Cesar saw the club secure a famous win over AC Milan. That success is even more impressive when you consider the Serie A side went on to win the competition when they beat Liverpool in the final.

Securing a path out of the UEFA Champions League group stage is something AEK Athens have never managed to do but will be hoping to produce just such a miracle this season.
