Belgian Pro League History

The Belgian First Division was founded back in 1895, making it one of the oldest top-division football leagues in Europe. Initially only seven teams took part in the round-robin tournament, though the competition has continually evolved over the years.

The league expanded to 18 teams in 1975, and from 2009/10 through 2025/26 operated a 16-team format with a regular season followed by separate championship, European qualification, and relegation play-offs. Ahead of the 2026/27 season, the league expanded back to 18 clubs and reverted to a straight round-robin format with no play-offs.

RSC Anderlecht are comfortably the most successful club in Belgian football, with no fewer than 34 league championships. Anderlecht enjoyed spells of dominance during the 1950s, 60s and 2000s, building a considerable gap ahead of their closest rivals.

Club Brugge became Belgian champions for a 20th time in 2025/26, having also lifted the title in 2024, for what was their seventh league title in ten years.

Other popular football clubs in Belgium include Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Standard Liège, who have won 12 and 10 league crowns, respectively. Royal Antwerp became five-time champions of Belgium in 2023, thus edging past KRC Genk in the process.

Similarly to at domestic level, Anderlecht are also the most successful Belgian team in terms of achievements on a European scale. The Brussels outfit won the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) in 1983, and also previously got their hands on the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and subsequently the UEFA Super Cup.

Club Brugge, meanwhile, made it to the final of the European Cup (precursor to the UEFA Champions League) in 1978 but ultimately lost to Liverpool. Standard Liège reached the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1982, though they ended runners-up to FC Barcelona.
