Black Crowes History

The Black Crowes were formed in the mid-1980s by the Robinson brothers, initially called Mr Crowe's Garden, and after gaining a name, their distinctive style and recognition by playing a horde of dates, they released their debut studio album in 1990.

Shake Your Money Maker proved a commercial success and was followed up two years later by The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, which gave the band their first US Billboard number-one album and sold over two million copies in the United States alone.

Among the big hit singles of this era were Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels, Twice as Hard and Jealous Again. Among the key elements of the band's progression came when they opened for ZZ Top, albeit that came to an end after Chris Robinson attacked the sponsors of the tour.

1994 saw the band release Amorica, which was a critically acclaimed record and saw vocalist Chris Robinson build on his reputation as a frontman with Rolling Stones undertones, albeit with a little more bite and danger.

This period was very much the band's early nadir, and they went through a few break-ups and reunions in the intervening years. Some members sought out solace from solo album projects, but in 2019, the band reunited once again.

This reunion was announced on the Howard Stern Show and saw brothers Chris and Rich Robinson patch things up. In 2024, the band will release their tenth studio album, with Happiness Bastards being their first new album since 2010's Croweology.
