ZZ Top History

ZZ Top were formed in 1969 with an original lineup put together in Houston, Texas. This saw a band made up of guitarist Billy Gibbons, bass player Lanier Grieg and drummer Dan Mitchell.

Their debut album, cleverly titled ZZ Top's First Album, was released on London Records in 1971 but failed to make much of an impact. The same can be said of their second effort, Rio Grande Mud, which followed the following year.

Tres Hombres

However, their third studio album, Tres Hombres, helped them break into the mainstream and break into the top ten on the US Billboard Albums chart. That release included their first big singles, La Grange and Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers make an impact.

By this point, Dan Mitchell had been replaced by drummer Frank Beard, and Billy Ethridge had come in on bass and keyboards. The 1970s were a success for the band, but the 1980s proved even more commercially dominant.

Eliminator

Their eighth album, Eliminator, went on to sell over 11 million copies in the United States in 1983 and the follow-up releases, Afterburner (1985) and Recycler (1990), were also well received by fans and critics alike.

Sharp Dressed Man

Over this period, they released a string of iconic singles, including Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, Sleeping Bag, Stages, Velcro Fly, Gimme All Your Lovin, Rough Boy and Doubleback.

In 2012, ZZ Top released their fifteenth album, their first in almost a decade, and La Futura went on to reach their highest Billboard chart placement since 1990.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

In 2015, ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, having sold over 50 million records worldwide and winning several prestigious awards and accolades. In 2019 a Netflix documentary about the band, titled That Little Ol Band from Texas, proved a big hit and earned a Grammy Award nomination.
