History: Bolivia National Team at Copa America

When Bolivia first participated in this competition, in 1926, it was still known as the South American Championship. Unfortunately, the debutants didn't have much of an impact with a last-place finish, having lost all four of their matches.

Bolivia hosted the event in 1963 for the first time and remarkably went on to capture a maiden title on home soil. La Verde went undefeated in their six round-robin games, winning five of them, including a 5-4 triumph over then-world champions Brazil, to pip Paraguay to top spot and be crowned champions of South America for the very first time.

This remains Bolivia's only continental success to date. When the country next next hosted the Copa America tournament in 1997, by which time the competition had rebranded to 'Copa America', La Verde advanced from their group with three wins out of three and without conceding a single goal. Bolivia defeated Colombia in the first knockout round and then Mexico in the semi-finals, but ultimately lost in the final against neighbours Brazil, once again World Cup holders at the time.

Bolivia failed to progress from the group stage at the following five editions of Copa America, winning zero of 15 group matches. In 2015, La Verde scraped through the group stage, despite a 5-0 thumping by eventual winners Chile, before they crashed out to Peru in the quarter-finals.
