History: Mexico at Copa America

Despite not being a member of CONMEBOL, the Mexico national football team has participated in Copa America on multiple occasions over the course of the last 30 years. This has been because the Mexican Football Federation regularly receives invitations to compete at the South American showpiece.

They made their Copa America debut in 1993, as one of 12 teams at the tournament hosted by Ecuador. Mexico advanced from the group stage as one of three third-place teams to progress to the quarter-finals.

Mexico earned a strong 4-2 win over Peru before knocking out host nation Ecuador in the semis, but ultimately lost to Argentina in the final.

El Tri ended runners-up again in 2001, this time losing to hosts Colombia in the Copa America final.

Mexico reached the semi-finals at back-to-back Copa tournaments (1997 and 1999) and once again made it to the last-four in 2007; they fell victim to Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina, respectively.

After crashing out at the quarter-final stage in 2016, Mexico are set to make a grand return to the Copa America tournament in 2024.
