Costa Rica National Team at Copa America
Los Ticos made their debut in this competition in 1997, four years after nations outside of South America became eligible to participate at Copa America. Costa Rica exited from the group, failing to beat any of Brazil, Colombia or Mexico.
The Central American country fared better at the 2001 tournament in Colombia. Costa Rica unexpectedly topped its group with two wins out of three, with striker Paulo Wanchope scoring four goals at the group stage. Ultimately though, Costa Rica lost out to Uruguay in the quarter-finals.
At the following edition in 2004, Los Ticos again advanced from the group, this time as one of the best-ranked third-place teams, though they were defeated by Colombia in the last-8.
Costa Rica played at Copa America 2011 and then at the Centenario edition five years later, but succumbed to elimination at the group stage on both occasions.
Costa Rica enjoyed a respectable Copa América 2024, finishing third in Group D with four points. Gustavo Alfaro's young side pulled off the shock result of the opening round with a disciplined 0-0 draw against Brazil in Inglewood, before losing 3-0 to eventual finalists Colombia and signing off with a 2-1 win over Paraguay in Austin. The Ticos finished just a point behind Brazil, missing out on the quarter-finals but leaving the tournament with their reputation enhanced after that stubborn defensive performance against the Seleção.
