Colin Hay Biography

Colin James Hay was born in June 1953 in Saltcoats, Scotland, and at the age of 14, his family left and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia.

Men At Work

His parents ran a music shop, helping to further Colin Hay's musical education. In 1978, he formed Men at Work with Ron Strykert.

The rock group's debut album, Business as Usual, was released in 1981 and was a global phenomenon. It reached number one in Australia, the UK, and the US Billboard Albums Chart. It sold over six million copies in the United States alone and over ten million globally.

Down Under

It also saw the band win a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The big-selling single from the album, Down Under, is the group's best-known work, and Who Can It Be Now also performed well around the world.

Two years later, they released their next album, Cargo, which was another big success, selling three million copies in the US. The singles Dr. Heckyl & Mr Jive, Overkill, It's a Mistake and High Wire all charted, and the group cemented their standing as a globally renowned act.

Their third and final studio album, Two Hearts, followed in 1985 but was less of a success, and the group split up in 1986, though they did reform for live shows sometime later and continue to play to this day.

Solo Career

Colin Hay released his debut solo album, Looking for Jack, in 1987 and it proved a critical and commercial success. 2002's Company of Strangers, Hay's seventh solo studio album, was another effort lauded by fans and critics alike, especially the track Beautiful World, which often features on his setlist.

Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band

From 2003, Colin Hay has been part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band, playing guitar and harmonica as well as providing vocals, for the supergroup and has done so ever since. 2015 saw the release of a well-received music documentary detailing Colin Hay's rise to prominence, with Waiting for My Real Life charting his life and career in poignant fashion.

In 2022, Colin Hay released Now and Evermore, an album that was supported by another successful tour.
