The Fray were formed in 2002 in Denver, Colorado by Isaac Slade, Joe King and Ben Wysocki. In 2005, having signed with Epic Records, The Fray released their debut album, How to Save a Life, with Dave Welsh making up their lineup for that record.

The record did incredibly well, selling over four million copies in the United States alone and proving successful around the world. The record's title track proved a big success also, getting to number three on the US singles chart and getting into the top ten across Europe.

The single How to Save Life appeared in the successful TV show Grey's Anatomy and also Scrubs and this helped to get the song airtime. Indeed, the song was not initially thought of as a single but went on to become the band's signature song and one they play at most shows, to the great delight of their adoring fans.

The song sold over five million copies in the United States and was one of the biggest songs of the decade.

Over My Head (Cable Car) is a song about Caleb Slade, who left the band and the track details the relationship between the two deeply bonded brothers; look After You and All at Once also charted well and put Fray well and truly on the rock map.

Four years later, they topped the US Billboard charts with their second album; their self-titled release also performed well in the UK and spawned a number of successful singles, including You Found Me, Never Say Never and Heartless.

2012 saw the band release their third album, Scars & Stories, which was a commercial and critical success and then in 2014, their fourth album, Helios, came out.

In 2016, the band released a greatest-hits album, Through the Years: The Best of The Fray, which was supported by a tour.

In 2022, Isaac Slade left the band, with Jeff Linsenmaier and Matt Rubano joining as touring members.

The Fray have gone on to sell millions of records, and among their many accolades are four Grammy nominations and three Billboard Music Awards.
