France are, without a doubt, one of the best and most revered teams in international football, though this hasn't always been the case. Les Bleus hosted the inaugural edition of the UEFA European Championship in 1960, but they finished last out of four competing nations.

The French failed to qualify for any of the next five Euro tournaments before eventually returning to the showpiece in 1984, once again held on home soil. France advanced all the way to the final and went on to capture a maiden European title. Michel Platini scored in each of his team's five games at the tournament, with six goals in the group stage as well as the winning strike against Portugal in the semi-finals.

France triumphed once again at Euro 2000 having narrowly lost out to the Czech Republic, on penalties, in the semi-finals four years prior. David Trezeguet netted the golden goal in extra-time for Les Bleus to defeat Italy in the final held at De Kuip in Rotterdam. After failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals at each of the next three editions, France hosted Euro 2016 and made it to the final once again. Despite boasting home ground advantage, and the brilliance of Antoine Griezmann, the French were unable to overcome Portugal at the Stade de France, prolonging their wait for a third European title.

Croatia, meanwhile, have never conquered the European Championship. Up until Euro 2024, the Kockasti had failed to reach the semi-finals (or beyond) of this competition. The Croats were beaten by eventual champions Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 1996; Jürgen Klinsmann opened the scoring in a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

These nations have contested some memorable encounters down the years, though perhaps none more so than the 2018 FIFA World Cup final. Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe were all on the scoresheet as France ran out 4-2 winners in front of 78,011 spectators at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

France and Croatia had met 20 years prior at the 1998 World Cup, which Les Bleus also went on to win. Lilian Thuram scored twice for the French to claim a 2-1 victory over Croatia in the semi-finals, before they emerged triumphant over Brazil, 3-0, at the Stade de France.

The first time Croatia and France met at the European Championship was in 2004. The sides played out a 2-2 draw in the group stage, though France would ultimately top the group while the Croats crashed out of the showpiece event. In more recent years, the teams have met a number of times in the UEFA Nations League.
