Neither of these teams have previously been crowned champions of the UEFA European Championship, and both of them have mostly struggled to feature in the latter stages of the competition.

Croatia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, five years before first taking part in a Euro finals event. The Kockasti advanced to the knockout phase at the first time of asking, finishing 2nd behind Portugal in their group. Ultimately though, Croatia would lose to eventual champions Germany, 2-1, in the quarter-finals.

At Euro 2008 the Croats topped their group with three wins out of three, including a precious 2-1 victory over Germany. However, Croatia crashed out to Turkey in the quarter-finals, losing on penalties. Croatia reached the Round of 16 at the 2016 tournament, losing to eventual champions Portugal, and exited at this stage again at the following edition following a dramatic 5-3 defeat to Spain.

Scotland, meanwhile, didn't advance beyond the group stage in any of their first three appearances at the finals of the European Championship. The Scots narrowly missed out on progression in 1992 and again four years later, before going winless and ending bottom of their group at Euro 2020.

The first time these teams shared a pitch at a major tournament was during the group stage of the Euro 2020 finals. Despite being played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, the 'home' side couldn't manage to overcome a strong Croatian outfit as Luka Modrić and Ivan Perišić each scored in a 3-1 win for the Kockasti.

Prior to this, Croatia and Scotland clashed in qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. The Scottish were victorious home and away, with Robert Snodgrass amongst the goals on either occasion.
