The first time these teams shared a pitch at a major tournament was in the quarter-finals of Euro 1996. Jürgen Klinsmann opened the scoring as Germany ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford, on their way to lifting a third European title.

Croatia and Germany met again two years later at the FIFA World Cup in France. Despite being champions of Europe at the time, Die Mannschaft suffered a humbling 3-0 defeat as the Croats advanced to the semi-finals on their first appearance at the World Cup.

The sides later shared a group at Euro 2008 and would clash in the Austrian city of Klagenfurt. Croatia once again claimed a shock victory over the Germans, 2-1, with Darijo Srna and Ivica Olić on target for the winning team. Lukas Podolski scored a consolation though it wasn't enough to prevent Croatia from topping their group. Despite this, it was in fact Germany that went on to reach the Euro 2008 final, though this resulted in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Spain.
