This competition was founded in 1966 and named after Joan Gamper, founder and later president of FC Barcelona. The second edition of the tournament saw Atletico Madrid take part together with Boca Juniors & Bayern Munich.

The Joan Gamper Trophy usually takes place at the Camp Nou, however the 2023 & 2024 editions were held at the Olympic Stadium (Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys) while the Camp Nou underwent renovations.

Since reverting to a two-team competition in 1997, the Joan Gamper Trophy has hosted some of Europe's leading clubs. Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich were the visiting team in 2006, while a number of Serie A teams (including AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli & Roma) have also featured in this annual event.

In addition, South American teams have been invited to particiapte in the Joan Gamper Trophy, such as Boca Juniors from Argentina as well as Brazilian club Chapecoense.
