Gregory Porter Biography

Gregory Porter was born in November 1971 in Sacramento, California and graduated from Highland High School in 1989, earning a scholarship as an American Football lineman from San Diego State University before a shoulder injury derailed his sporting career.

In 2004, he moved to Brooklyn with his brother and worked as a chef. Gregory Porter released his debut album, Water, in 2010, and it was a moderate success, charting in Germany. Be Good followed in 2012, which also performed well across Europe and included the singles Be Good (Lion's Song) and On My Way to Harlem.

It was his third studio album, Liquid Spirit, that really helped to put Gregory Porter on the mainstream map. The record reached the top ten in the UK and made it to the US Billboard Albums charts whilst also garnering glowing reviews.

The album was accompanied by several singles, including Musical Genocide, The 'In' Crowd, No Love Dying, Hey Laura, and Water Under Bridges (featuring Laura Mvula).

2016 saw the arrival of Take Me to the Alley, which saw Gregory Porter's continued rise to prominence, with singles Don't Lose Your Stream and Consequence of Love both released from the record.

Among the many awards and nominations that Gregory Porter has secured over the course of his storied career are the Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2013 for Liquid Spirit. He once again won the Jazz Vocal Album award in 2016, this time for Take Me to the Alley.

Nat King Cole & Me proved another monumental success for Gregory Porter, reaching number three on the UK charts in 2017. That was followed by All Rise in 2020, which performed well across Europe and reached number two on the US Top Jazz Albums chart.

Gregory Porter cites among his many influences Donny Hathaway, Nat King Cole, and Bill Withers. Regarding his love of gospel music, he lists Ray Charles as a key influence.
