Ipswich Town FC History

Ipswich Town Football Club has a long and storied history spanning more than 145 years. The club was founded in 1878, initially under the name 'Ipswich A.F.C.', before the current name was adopted in 1888.

Only in 1938/39 did Ipswich Town compete in the Football League for the first time, earning a seventh-place finish on debut in the Third Division. This happened to be the last full season before World War Two broke out.

Rise to Fame Under Alf Ramsey

Following the War, Ipswich gradually improved and eventually won the Third Division title in 1954 but they were soon relegated from the Second Division. The Blues returned to the second tier in 1957 and just four years later won the title to earn top-flight status for the very first time.

Things got even better for ITFC as manager Alf Ramsey guided the Suffolk-based team to the First Division title in their very first season competing in the premier division. This was the first time a club had achieved such a feat, with the exception of Preston North End in the inaugural campaign of the Football League.

Ramsey stepped down from his role as Ipswich manager in 1963, having accepted the job to lead the England national team. He famously steered the Three Lions to World Cup glory in 1966.

Resurgence Under Robson

In 1969, Ipswich appointed a young Bobby Robson as the new head coach. Still just 35 years-old at the time, and taking up just his second full-time managerial position, Robson went on to wow everyone associated with English football.

A slow start to his reign was finally vindicated as Ipswich regained its place towards the top end of the First Division table and asserted itself as a force to be reckoned with in the English game.

Ipswich Town won the FA Cup for the first time in 1978 before earning back-to-back second-place finishes behind Liverpool in the First Division. The FA Cup success came three years after a heartbreaking semi-final exit at the hands of eventual winners West Ham United.

ITFC captured a maiden European title in 1981, hoisting the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) with a 5-4 aggregate victory over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the final. Like Ramsey before him, Robson left Ipswich to take up the job as England boss.

Ipswich reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup again in 1980/81, losing to Manchester City. Since then, however, Town's best performance in the FA Cup was a run to the quarter-finals in 1993.

Premier League Era

Ipswich Town was a founding member of the Premier League in the early 1990s, surviving two seasons before finishing rock bottom in 1995 as the top flight downsized from 22 teams to 20. The Tractor Boys returned to the Premier League in 2000, but dropped back down to the new First Division two years later.

In more recent times, Ipswich progressed to the EFL Cup semi-finals in 2010/11. The Blues won the first leg, 1-0, against Arsenal, though the Gunners would ultimately claim a 3-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium. This came three decades after Ipswich had been defeated by Liverpool, also in the League Cup semis.

Following the arrival of Kieran McKenna as head coach in late 2021, ITFC stormed League One in the 2022/23 campaign, earning 98 points and scoring a total of 101 league goals to earn automatic promotion to the Championship. The very next season the Tractor Boys finished 2nd in the Championship, just a single point behind champions Leicester City, to seal a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
