James Arthur was born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire in March 1988 and initially used SoundCloud and YouTube to help garner exposure and released an independent album in 2011 titled Sins by the Sea.

In 2012 he auditioned for the ninth series of X Factor and beat Jahmene Douglas in the final to clinch the title. His debut single and breakthrough hit
