John Marty Stuart was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi, in September 1958 and had mastered the guitar by the age of just 12 before joining a local gospel band.
His early touring experiences included working with Lester Flatt and being a member of Johnny Cash's band. His debut album, With A Little Help From My Friends, was released in 1978, and his first taste of commercial success came with the release of his self-titled third album, which came out in 1986 and rose up the Country Music charts. Hillbilly Rock charted well in both the US and Canada in 1989.
That release included no less than four hit singles, Arlene, Honky Tonker, All Because of You, and Do You Really Want My Lovin'. 1992's This One's Gonna Hurt You went gold and saw the title track perform very well (with Travis Tritt accompanying Stuart).
Love and Luck (1994) and Honky Tonkin's What I Do Best (1996) both performed well, proving a success on both the US Billboard 200 and the Country Music charts.
In 1997, Marty Stuart married country star Connie Smith, who had been a childhood friend.
In 2002, Marty Stuart formed the Fabulous Superlatives, essentially his backing band, with cousin Kenny Vaughn on guitar, Harry Stinson on drums, and Brian Glenn on bass. Chris Scruggs would go on to replace Martin.
2014's Saturday Night/Sunday Morning saw Marty Stuart hit the US Billboard mainstream charts for the first time since 1996.
In 2020, Marty and The Superlatives teamed up with the Steve Miller Band on a hugely successful summer tour.
In 2022, The Country Music Hall of Fame opened the Marty Stuart Collection, which includes incredible country music artifacts and is a further testament to Stuart's iconic standing as a performer. 2023 saw the release of Marty Stuart's nineteenth studio album, Altitude, which earned glowing reviews, though it was not as big a commercial success as it had achieved previously.
Among the many accolades earned by Marty Stuart as of 2024 are five Grammy Awards, a number of CMA (Country Music Association) Awards, and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score in 2020 for his work on the Matt Damon-helmed movie All the Pretty Horses.
