Biography Moby

Richard Melville Hall, aka Moby, was born in New York City in September 1965 and started to take up music at a very early age. His alias came from the fact that many believed he was related to author Herman Melville, who wrote Moby Dick, who is, in fact, no relation to the musician.

In the early 1980s, he played with a hardcore punk band before moving more into electronic dance music.

Among those he has cited as influences are David Bowie, Nick Drake, Public Enemy and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)

He released his debut album in 1992 to moderate reviews, and subsequent releases, Ambient (1993), Everything is Wrong (1995), and Animal Rights (1996), served to build exposure to Moby as an artist, but arguably, he was still relatively unknown on the mainstream music scene.

During this period, he had some success on the US Dance Music Charts with tracks like Go, Move (You Make Me Feel So Good), and That's When I Reach for My Revolver.

Effectively everything changed with the release of Play in 1999. The album was initially a slow burner before tracks were picked up for various commercial projects, which led to the album having a life of its own before becoming a seminal release. It topped the charts in the UK and performed well around the world, selling over two and a half million copies in the United States. This success came over a decade after he had initially started to make an impact.

Singles from Play also performed well, with Natural Blues, Porcelain, Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad, and Bodyrock all doing well. Moby collaborates with many artists; on that particular release, he performed with Gwen Stefani and Kelis.

The follow-up release, 18, also performed well, scoring number-one hits around the world. Extreme Ways became something of an anthem and was used in the Bourne film franchise.

Hotel, released in 2005, followed and was also a big success, and Moby has continued to release material regularly ever since. In 2024 he released his 22nd album, Always Centred at Night, which will be supported by another series of live dates.

Moby has sold tens of millions of records worldwide and won a host of accolades, including Billboard Music Awards, MTV Awards as well as six Grammy Award nominations.
