Nottingham Forest featured in the inaugural edition of the English Football League Cup during the 1960/61 season, advancing to the fourth round, though only in the late 60s did NFFC begin to regularly take part in the competition.

NFFC won a maiden League Cup title in 1978, owing to a narrow 1-0 win against Liverpool. Brian Clough's side managed to defend the trophy, beating Southampton 3-2 at Wembley Stadium. The following year Forest reached the final yet again but ultimately lost to Wolves.

Nottingham Forest advanced to the quarter-finals multiple times in the 80s, eventually reclaiming League Cup glory in the 1988/89 season. Nigel Clough, son of manager Brian, scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Luton Town.

Once again Forest kept hold of the title thanks to a 1-0 success versus Oldham Athletic in the 1990 final. Two years later NFFC came within touching distance of a fifth title coup, though they were unable to defeat Manchester United.
