Poland vs Portugal History
There's no denying that Portugal have been the more successful of these two teams at the UEFA European Championship. The Seleção debuted at the 1984 edition of the tournament and went on to reach the semi-finals, but ultimately lost out to hosts France, 3-2, in extra-time.
The Portuguese advanced to the semi-finals at Euro 2000, but missed out to eventual winners France. Four years later Portugal would come even closer to European glory, only to lose against underdogs Greece in the final. Portugal had overcome England (on penalties) and the Netherlands in the quarter- and semi-finals, respectively.
Portugal later suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the semi-finals of Euro 2012. Finally, in 2016, the Seleção claimed European honours for the first time as they edged hosts France in front of 75,868 at the Stade de France.
Poland only featured at the European Championship for the first time in 2008, but didn't make much of an impact with a group-stage exit. A similar fate ensued at Euro 2012 with another exit at the first round.
Euro 2016 was considerably better for the Eagles, as they made it to the knockouts of the Euro finals for the first time. Poland ended 2nd in their group, closely behind Germany, before edging Switzerland (on penalties) in the Round of 16. Poland then crashed out in the quarter-finals, losing to none other than Portugal in a penalty shootout. The Polish ended bottom of their group at Euro 2020, but did salvage a draw against Spain.
Poland vs Portugal Head-to-Head
The first time these teams shared a pitch at a major tournament was during the 1986 World Cup. Poland recorded a narrow 1-0 victory and subsequently secured a berth to the knockout rounds.
The sides shared a group again at the 2002 World Cup, as Portugal cruised to a 4-0 win. Pauleta netted a hat-trick and Rui Costa rounded off the scoring, though neither team advanced beyond the group stage.
In 2016 Poland and Portugal clashed at the Euro finals for the first time. They met in the quarter-finals, at the Stade Vélodrome, as Robert Lewandowski scored early on to put Poland in front. Renato Sanches equalised before half-time and the teams wouldn't be separated thereafter, sending the tie to penalties. Jakub Błaszczykowski failed to convert from the spot and the Portuguese went on to clinch a maiden European title.
