SL Benfica's Top Achievements In the Champions League
With Eusebio leading the line, SL Benfica made a significant impact in the early years of the European Cup, the predecessor of the Champions League. The Portuguese giants won back-to-back European Cup titles in 1961 and 1962, under the management of Béla Guttmann. These triumphs marked Benfica as one of the continent's premier football clubs.
They've since appeared in five more European Cup finals - 1963, 1965, 1968, 1988 and 1990 - but have failed to add a third trophy to their collection. Legend has it that Béla Guttmann placed a curse on SL Benfica after the club refused to give him a payrise after the 1962 European Cup final win. He quit the club and cursed them, "Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever be European champions again".
Since his 1962 departure, Benfica have since lost eight European finals in a row.
