The Black Keys History

The Black Keys were formed in 2001 with guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney meeting as young kids in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. The two youngsters both come from musical backgrounds and the pairing of the two was secured about an hour after their coming together to play.

Both attended the University of Akron before dropping out and started to play gigs in local bars. They signed, initially, with a Los Angeles label by the name of Alive before moving to Nonesuch records, owned by Warner Brothers.

The pair released their debut album, The Big Come Up, in 2002 to moderate success.

The follow-up albums Thickfreakness (2003), Rubber Factory (2004), and Magic Potion (2006) saw the band mature and secure the exposure needed to take things to another level.

The band's fifth studio album, Attack and Release, came out in 2008, secured critical acclaim and broke the band in many territories. In 2010 Brothers proved a massive hit. It reached number three on the US Billboard Charts and sold almost a million copies in the United States alone. That record included hits Tighten Up and Howlin' for You.

El Camino, released a year later, sold over two million copies in the United States and included the hits Lonely Boy, Gold on the Ceiling and Little Black Submarines. In 2014 they released Turn Blue, which gave the band their first ever US Billboard Album Chart number one and earned glowing reviews.
