Ukraine vs Belgium History
The Ukraine national team made its debut at the 2012 European Championship, co-hosting the tournament with Poland. The Blue and Yellow won their opening game versus Sweden, 2-1, with Andriy Shevchenko netting twice at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv with around 65,000 in attendance. Unfortunately the home side would crash out following losses to England and France.
Ukraine failed to score in any of its three group games at Euro 2016, stumbling to defeats against Germany, Northern Ireland and Poland. Redemption followed at the belated 2020 edition, in which Shevchenko (as manager) guided the team to the knockouts of this competition for the first time. The Blue and Yellow advanced as one of the best-ranked third-place teams and subsequently beat Sweden in the Round of 16, thanks to Artem Dovbyk's winner in extra-time. Ukraine then suffered a 4-0 thrashing in the quarter-finals, at the hands of eventual finalists England.
Belgium first played in the European Championship in 1972, in what was the fourth edition of the tournament, and ended third out of four competing teams. Die Roten Teufel (The Red Devils) finished runners-up at Euro 1980, following a 2-1 defeat to West Germany at the Stadio Olimpico.
After a group-stage exit in 1984, Belgium would only feature at the Euro finals once more – as co-hosts of Euro 2000 – before the team made its return to the international stage in the early-to-mid 2010s. The Red Devils were knocked out in the quarter-finals at Euro 2016, losing to Wales, as well as at the next edition when they fell to eventual champions Italy.
