Ukraine vs Scotland History

Scotland hadn't featured at the European Championship many times prior to the 2024 finals. In fact, the Scottish failed to advance beyond the group stage in each of their first three appearances at the tournament, first in 1992 and then again four years later. Scotland ended bottom of their group at Euro 2020, having failed to beat any of England, Croatia or the Czech Republic.

Ukraine are also relatively young in experience at major tournaments, having only debuted at the Euro finals as co-hosts of the 2008 edition. The Blue and Yellow beat Sweden, 2-1, in their group opener but went on to crash out without advancing to the knockouts.

The Ukrainians suffered another group-stage exit in 2016, before they progressed to the knockouts for the first time at Euro 2020. The Blue and Yellow were one of four third-place teams to advance and they even managed to overcome Sweden in the last-16, but ultimately lost to eventual finalists England, 4-0, in the quarter-finals.

These teams had never met at a major tournament prior to Euro 2024, though they did share a pitch no fewer than three times in 2022 alone. Ukraine defeated Scotland, 3-1, in qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Scots would take their revenge when the teams reconvened just a few months later in the UEFA Nations League; John McGinn opened the scoring in a 3-0 win at Hampden Park, before the sides played out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture one week later.

Ukraine and Scotland also previously met in qualifiers for Euro 2008, with either team winning their home fixture against one another.
