As part of the Copa America’s evolution, the tournament, previously known as the South American Football Championship, has looked to expand to include other nations from farther afield.
The tournament was first played in 2016 with only four South American nations taking part, but by 1975, ten countries entered, and by 1993, this had expanded still further to 12, meaning that teams from CONCACAF (North and Central America) had joined the fun.
Indeed, entrants have actually come from even further afield. Japan took part in both 1999 and 2019, while Qatar also took part in 2019. The United States first took part in 1993 and have experienced a decent level of success in the tournament.
The football market in the United States continues to grow and has clearly been aided by the arrival of Argentine legend Lionel Messi to boost the standing of Major League Soccer (MLS), and fans will be looking to see the national team take on the cream of the crop in South America’s premier international tournament.
Trying to buy tickets is not so easy, not least because millions of fans register an interest in doing so every time a tournament appears on the horizon. Some will look to use CONMEBOL’s official ticketing area but will struggle to succeed down this route.

Venezuela first appeared in the Copa America in 1967, and they were very much the weak link in the tournament. After securing one win from five games in their debut campaign, they then failed to win a single match in any of their next 12 editions, but in 2007, they made real strides in the competition.
La Vinotinto reached the Quarter-Finals on that occasion, and then four years later, at the 2011 finals in Argentina, they went a step further. Victory against Ecuador and impressive draws with Brazil and Paraguay saw Venezuela qualify for the Quarter-Finals, where they met Chile, whom they defeated 2-1.
That set up a first-ever Copa America Semi-Final for Venezuela, and after a goalless draw, they lost out to Paraguay on penalties before completing a fourth-place finish.
At both the 2016 and 2019 Copa Americas, they got to the Quarter-Finals, losing to Argentina on both occasions.
The United States were first invited to the Copa America in 1993, where they lost to both Uruguay and Ecuador before drawing with Venezuela in their final group game, and they duly finished bottom of the pile.
Two years later, under Steve Sampson, the United States national team performed much more effectively. They topped their group thanks to wins over Chile and Argentina before beating Mexico on penalties in the Quarter-Finals.
In the Semi-Finals, the US lost to Brazil, with former AS Roma man Aldair scoring the only goal of the game.
A group stage exit followed in their next Copa America in 2007, and in 2016, they once again impressed, this time in a Copa America tournament that they also hosted.
They lost their opener against Colombia before thumping Costa Rica 4-0, with former Fulham and Tottenham man Clint Dempsey among the scorers. They closed out their group with another win, this time over Paraguay.
Dempsey was again on the scoresheet as the US beat Ecuador in the Quarter-Finals in Seattle, but in the Semi-Finals, Barcelona star Lionel Messi was among the scorers in a comfortable 4-0 win for Argentina.
Venezuela and the United States have met once previously in the Copa America, and that produced a thrilling encounter.
The US rushed into a three-nil lead in Quito thanks to goals from Christopher Henderson, Alexei Lalas, and Dominic Kinnear, only for Venezuela to battle back to secure a 3-3 draw, a result that meant neither side would progress to the knockout phase.
