The Copa America has a greater history than both the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championships, and the iconic event is growing in size and stature with every edition of the tournament.
The first running of the South American Football Championships, as it was then known, was in 1916, some time ahead of the World Cup and decades before Europe got around to starting its own continental event.
It would be fair to say that the original format was a little on the humble side, with only four nations taking part, but slowly but surely, the expansion of the event to include all South American nations, as well as others from CONCACAF (North and Central America) has helped to really make the event a truly special occasion.
In 2016, for the centenary event, 16 nations took part in what was an incredible feast of football and each running of the tournament since then has continued to see the competition increase in popularity and stature.
Supporters from around the world are looking to secure tickets for the event, keen to experience the amazing atmosphere and high-quality football on offer. Many look to make a holiday of the trip, combining a visit to the host nation with the chance to watch one game or even more.

For a huge part of Venezuela’s participation in the Copa America, they have been considered the whipping boys of South America. Between 1967, their debut in the finals, and 2007, they managed just one single win, but by 2007, they had made real strides in the competition.
Venezuela reached the Quarter-Finals in 2007 and then, in 2011, went all the way to the Semi-Finals, where they were unfortunate to lose to Paraguay on penalties after a goalless draw in Mendoza.
In both 2016 and 2019, they fought their way out of the group stage and into the Quarter-Finals; in the first of these campaigns, a brace from Gonzalo Higuain and goals from Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Tottenham winger Erik Lamela saw Argentina beat them 4-1 at the Foxborough in Boston.
2019 resulted in another last-eight loss to Argentina, with Lautaro Martinez and Giovanni Lo Celso scoring in a 2-0 win in Rio.
As of 2023, no national team had won the Copa America more than Uruguay, and the record La Celeste have in the competition is indeed very laudable.
Uruguay won five of the first eight Copa America finals they competed in, and this coincided with their success at the FIFA World Cup, which they won in 1930.
Back-to-back wins in 1983 and 1987 saw the likes of Carlos Aguilera and former Marseille playmaker Enzo Francescoli perform incredibly well. In 2011, they lifted their first Copa America in 16 years and did so in style.
After easing themselves through the group phase, they took on Argentina in the Quarter-Finals, and former Liverpool and Barcelona star Luis Suarez was among the goalscorers in their successful penalty shoot-out victory, which came after a tight 1-1 draw.
Suarez netted twice in a Semi-Final win over Peru to set up a final with Paraguay, where the goal machine opened the scoring before former Manchester United flop Diego Forlan scored two himself to complete a comfortable 3-0 victory in the Copa America Final.
Uruguay have struggled to make an impact in the tournament since then, with a number of Quarter-Final exits being the extent of their progress in recent years.
As of 2023, Venezuela had played Uruguay on no fewer than nine occasions, and on most of these occasions, it was the Uruguayans who emerged victorious, with few exceptions.
In 1997, goals from Inter Milan’s Alvaro Recoba and Marcelo Saralegui gave Uruguay a 2-0 win in their group-stage clash with La Vinotinto.
At the 2007 Copa America, they faced each other twice. The first game came in the group phase and ended in a goalless draw, and again in the Quarter-Finals, where Diego Forlan scored twice in an easy 4-1 victory.
In 2016, Venezuela finally defeated Uruguay in Copa America action, with former Newcastle United forward Salomon Rondon scoring the only goal of the game in Philadelphia.
