Venezuela vs Peru Copa America Tournament Record

To say that Venezuela struggled in their initial appearances in the Copa America would be very much an understatement. In the forty years between their debut in 1967 and 2007, they managed just one group stage win.

Their fortunes changed in a big way at the 2007 edition, where they reached the Quarter-Finals of the tournament, and four years later, at the 2011 Copa America, they came very close to their first appearance in the Copa America Final, only missing out on doing so when they lost to Paraguay in the Semi-Finals on penalties.

Their improvement has been ongoing, with La Vinotinto reaching the Quarter-Finals in both 2016 and 2019.

Peru first appeared in the Copa America in 1927, when they finished third, and they did so again in 1935 and then picked up their first title in 1939. They would not reach those dizzy heights again for some time, with their next title coming in 1975.

In more recent editions, they have impressed in patches. At the 2011 Copa America, La Blanquirroja beat Peru in the Quarter-Finals before losing 2-0 to Uruguay, with former Liverpool and Barcelona goal machine Luis Suarez scoring twice.

Four years later, Peru repeated the feat. National team legend Paolo Guerrero, two-time Bundesliga winner with Bayern Munich, scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Bolivia in the Quarter-Finals before losing to Chile in the Semi-Finals.

In 2019, they beat Colombia and Chile in the knockout phase before facing Brazil in the final, with Guerrero netting in a 3-1 loss to the host nation.
