With over a century of history, the Copa America is one of the most iconic national team tournaments in the football world. The best of the best in South America battle it out for the ultimate prize as the champions of the continent, and over the decades, the event has grown to epic proportions.
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay took part in the first-ever edition of what was then known as the South American Football Championship, or Campeonato Sudamericano de Fútbol in Spanish or Campeonato Sul-Americano de Futebol as it’s called in Portuguese.
The event remained a four-team competition until 1935 and increased to eight in 1947. In 1975, the tournament expanded again, this time to ten teams.
In 1993, the tournament chose to expand from 10 South American nations to 12, with the additional spots going to two teams from CONCACAF (North and Central America), and in 2016, to mark the century anniversary, 16 teams took part in the tournament which was hosted by the United States a tournament that saw almost one and a half million fans watching the games live and in person.

Venezuela first appeared in the Copa America in 1967, and their record in the tournament over the next forty years could be best described as abysmal. Over the course of 12 finals tournaments La Vinotinto played 45 games and managed just one single win over that period.
However, at the 2007 Copa America, they competed well and even made it to the Quarter-Finals of the tournament, where they were thumped 4-1 by Uruguay, and four years later, they made it all the way to the Semi-Final, drawing with both Brazil and Paraguay in the group phase and beating Ecuador to set up a last-eight match against Chile which they duly won.
They faced Paraguay in the Semi-Finals and came painfully close to a first appearance in the final, only to lose on penalties.
Quarter-Final exits in 2016 and 2019 showed continued consistency from Venezuela as they were taken down by Argentina on both occasions.
Colombia first took part in the Copa America in 1945 and largely failed to impress until 1975, when they made it all the way to the final when they lost to Peru after a play-off clash.
During the late 1980s and 1990s, Colombia were a force to be reckoned with, finishing third in the Copa America in 1987, 1993, and 1995, and they finally won their first title in 2001 at the tournament that they hosted.
In the group phase, Francisco Maturana’s side won all three matches, beating Venezuela, Ecuador, and Chile, all without conceding a goal. Wins over Peru and Honduras saw them through to the Copa America Final.
There, they edged out Mexico 1-0 thanks to a goal from Inter Milan legend Ivan Cordoba in Bogota. Prolific marksman Victor Aristizabal finished top scorer in the tournament, and Colombia went through the entire competition without conceding a goal.
Los Cafeteros are yet to secure a second title but have finished in third place in recent editions of the tournament, doing so in 2016 and 2021.
Venezuela and Colombia have met on numerous occasions in the Copa America and invariably, the games have ended in the favour of the Colombians. However, in 2015, when they were drawn into the same group, former Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon scored the winner for Venezuela in a 1-0 victory in Rancagua.
In 2021, the two teams played out a dour 0-0 draw in the group phase, with Venezuela ultimately finishing bottom of the pile and Colombia going to qualify for the knockout phase.
