The Copa America has over a century of history, making it an older tournament than the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championships. The competition’s first edition involved just four teams and saw Uruguay emerge victorious in Argentina in 1916.
By 1975, the number of entrants had increased to ten and had moved, initially, to a once every four years format, and by 1993, the size was increased to 12 teams, and 16 appeared in the 2016 edition to mark the hundred years since the tournament was first held.
Copa America 2024 also sees 16 nations take part, with the best of South America being joined by nations in the CONCACAF region, and interest in attending has also increased in recent years, with millions seeking out tickets to see the big guns in action.
The likes of Argentina and Brazil will always attract interest, and the same goes for the likes of Uruguay and Colombia, as well as the biggest nations in North America, including the United States and Mexico.

Venezuela rarely impressed in the Copa America in their first forays into the tournament, with their debut coming in 1967. It would take forty years for the national side to emerge from the initial group stage, something they finally achieved in 2007.
Four years later, they got all the way to the Semi-Finals before they lost to Paraguay on penalties. At both 2016 and 2019 editions they made it to the last eight and have steadily become a trickier team to face in the competition.
La Roja took part in the inaugural Copa America in 1916 but didn’t really impress in the tournament until the 1950s when they finished runners-up in back-to-back editions in 1955 and 1956.
In 1979 and 1987, they also reached the final but failed to clinch a title, a run they finally brought to an end in 2015 when they won their first-ever Copa America, on home soil.
They topped their group on that occasion, scoring ten goals in three games, before edging past Uruguay in the Quarter-Finals by a single goal and then edged past Peru in the Semi-Finals to set up a Copa America Final against Argentina.
The game ended without a goal being scored and went to penalties, with former Arsenal and Manchester United star Alexis Sanchez netting his among Chile’s four spot-kicks while both Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega missed theirs to hand the title to the underdogs in Santiago.
To prove that success was no fluke, Chile performed excellently in the United States at the 2016 edition of the tournament. They eased through the group phase before thrashing Mexico 7-0 in the Quarter-Finals and then dumped Colombia out in the Semi-Finals to set up a repeat of the 2015 final.
Once again, Chile and Argentina played out a 0-0 encounter which went to penalties, with history repeating itself with Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Lucas Biglia missing their spot-kicks to hand the title to their opposition.
A fourth-place finish came in 2019, and 2021 saw Chile get to the Quarter-Finals, where they lost to Brazil, the only goal of the game coming from West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta.
Venezuela and Chile have met on countless occasions in the Copa America. In 1999, Chile ran out 3-0 winners with Ivan Zamorano among the goals in their group stage encounter in Paraguay.
In 2011, Venezuela secured a memorable 2-1 Quarter-Final win over Chile in Argentina, with Gabriel Cichero scoring a late winner before La Vinotinto were then knocked out in the Semi-Finals by Paraguay.
