It would be fair to say that Union Berlin’s European experiences have been modest, and 2023/24 is the first season they will take part in the UEFA Champions League.

They first qualified for European action in 2001/02 and only made it to the Second Round of the UEFA Cup and another twenty years followed before they had a chance to atone for that failure when they competed in the newly formed UEFA Europa Conference League and failed to qualify from their group.

The following season saw them mount a fairly strong UEFA Europa League run, where they finished second in their group before impressing in a victory over Ajax in the Play-Off Round before they were knocked out by Union Saint-Gilloise in the Round of 16.

A remarkable run of form since gaining promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019 has seen them rise to prominence. A fifth-place finish in 2021/22 was improved upon in 2022/23, with Urs Fischer taking the club into the top four and thereby gaining them entry to the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal, on the other hand, are UEFA Champions League veterans, albeit having sat out six successive seasons of the competition until Mikel Arteta’s hard-fought second-place finish in the Premier League in 2022/23 saw them secure a return to the European top table.

From 2003/04 and 2016/17, Arsenal never failed to firstly qualify for the UEFA Champions League and secondly secure a place in the knockout phase, and that’s a remarkably consistent level of form.

The only downside to this period was the seemingly repetitive run of losing to the first big side they came up against in the knockout phase.

During that particular run, that came in the form of FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich on no less than four occasions each.
