Arsenal vs FC Porto History

Despite Arsenal being one of the most successful teams in the Premier League, it is in fact FC Porto which is the more successful of these two clubs in European competition.

The Dragões were first crowned European champions in 1987, defeating Bayern Munich in the European Cup final. More recently, in 2004, Porto remarkably won the UEFA Champions League under the tutelage of José Mourinho, still just a few years into his managerial career.

The closest Arsenal came to celebrating European honours was in 2006. The Gunners reached the UEFA Champions League final but ultimatwly went on to lose to FC Barcelona.

Arsène Wenger’s team later progressed to the semi-finals in 2008/09, though ultimately lost to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

These teams first met during the 2006/07 Champions League campaign, in what was the first group stage match played at the newly-built Emirates Stadium. Thierry Henry scored in a 2-0 home win for the Gunners, followed by a goalless draw at Estádio do Dragão at the end of the group campaign. Both Arsenal and Porto advanced to the Round of 16 that season.

They reconvened in the 2008/09 Champions League, once again at the group stage. Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie netted twice apiece as Arsenal earned a resounding 4-0 victory, before Porto salvaged a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture.

The following season Arsenal and Porto met in the Champions League knockout phase for the first time. Radamel Falcao scored the winning goal in a 2-1 success for Porto in the first leg, though Arsene Wenger’s side responded with a 5-0 thumping in North London; Nicklas Bendtner found the net three times on the night with Samir Nasri also on the scoresheet.
