German side RB Leipzig have come an incredibly long way in a relatively short period of time.

Die Rotten Bullen, or Red Bulls for non-German speakers, were only formed in 2009, and backed by massive investment, they went from fifth-tier to the Bundesliga in just seven seasons and amazingly finished second in their first season in the top division.

They are a club that generates a great deal of discussion and a fair amount of consternation in Germany, but you can’t argue with their astounding progression, and it is worth noting just how well the club have adapted to life in the UEFA Champions League in the relatively few number of occasions they have competed in the competition.

Their UEFA Champions League bow came in 2017/18, and they managed to finish third in their group to continue their adventure in the UEFA Europa League, where they made it through to the Quarter-Finals.

In 2019/20, in just their second attempt at UEFA Champions League action, they got all the way through to the Semi-Finals, having beaten Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 and Quarter-Finals, respectively, but their excellent run was brought to an end by Paris Saint-Germain in a one-legged clash.

Round of 16 finishes came in both 2020/21 and 2022/23, and they will provide a stiff test for Arsenal.

The North London side missed out on UEFA Champions League action for six seasons after their 2016/17 run to the last 16, where they suffered an agonizing thumping at the hands of Bayern Munich, with the German giants hammering Arsene Wenger’s side 10-2 on aggregate.

Mikel Arteta has brought some pride back to the club, taking the club to a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2022/23, and fans of the team will be looking to their team to make a real impact and will be pushing to end their European Cup/UEFA Champions League drought.

Of course, in 2005/06, they came mighty close to clinching the crown, only to lose to FC Barcelona after getting to the last quarter of the game with a lead despite having only ten men, only for Samuel Eto’o and Juliano Belletti to score late goals to win the game in Paris.
