Arsenal & Paris Saint-Germain are truly two of Europe’s biggest clubs, and one major thing the two have in common is the lack of a UEFA Champions League title between them. These teams are among the most successful in their respective domestic leagues, though on a continental scale Arsenal & PSG have fallen short of capturing Champions League glory.
Both teams have previously played in the UEFA Champions League final, first Arsenal in 2006 and then Paris Saint-Germain in the 2019/20 season. Ultimately, they each had to settle for 2nd place, losing to FC Barcelona & Bayern Munich, respectively. It would be fair to say that supporters of both Arsenal & PSG feel this is a failure which needs to be rectified.
Arsenal only twice qualified for the predecessor to the UEFA Champions League, the European Cup, with those appearances coming in the 1971/72 & 1991/92 seasons. Following Arsène Wenger’s arrival at the club in 1996, the club's European adventures became both more commonplace & more effective. Indeed, from 1998/99 to 2016/17, Arsenal appeared in the competition on 19 occasions, and though they failed to progress from the group phase in the first two of those editions, the Gunners then managed to progress to at least the next stage on every other occasion.
Between 2005/06 and 2009/10, Arsenal reached the Champions League final once, the quarter-finals twice, and the semi-finals once, losing to the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool & Manchester United on those occasions. 2016/17 was the last time Arsenal qualified for the competition before a six-year drought followed, during which the Gunners mostly featured in the Europa League. The north London outfit returned to the Champions League arena in 2023.
PSG’s history is equally mixed in the sense that prior to new owners putting in massive investment into the club, the first-team didn’t make all that much of an impact in any UEFA competitions. The Parisiens did, however, manage a relatively rich run of form in the mid-90s.
In 1992/93, PSG fought their way to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) before Juventus dumped them out of the competition. The following season, PSG made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, where it was Arsenal that got the better of the French side. 1994/95 saw PSG advance to the Champions League semi-finals, where AC Milan made light work of them, winning 3-0 on aggregate.
Between 2012/13 & 2022/23, PSG have reached at least the Round of 16 in every edition of the Champions League. The Parisiens made the UCL final in 2019/20 but ultimately lost to Bayern Munich in Lisbon, with Kingsley Coman scoring the decisive goal at the expense of his former team.
A select few players have been able to say they represented both of these esteemed European clubs.
Nicolas Anelka is perhaps the first that comes to mind. Arsenal purchased the striker as a 17-year-old during the 1996/97 season, shortly after Arsène Wenger had taken over as manager of the Gunners. Anelka made his name in north London, notably scoring in the FA Cup final win over Newcastle United shortly after earning a maiden cap with France. He went on to complete a mega €35m move to Real Madrid in 1999. Anelka returned to PSG just 12 months later, bringing an end to his underwhelming spell in Madrid.
Mikel Arteta joined PSG, on loan from Barcelona, in 2001 having failed to earn a senior appearance for the Catalan club. After six-and-a-half years with Everton, Arteta signed for Arsenal in 2011. He was named captain of the Gunners in 2014 and would later take charge of the senior team in December 2019, for what was his first managerial role.
David Luiz enjoyed two seasons with PSG, sandwiched by separate stints at Chelsea. The ex-Brazil defender switched to Chelsea's London rivals Arenal in 2019 and he made 73 appearances for the Gunners before returning to his homeland.
The first time these teams shared a pitch was in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals of 1993/94. The first leg in Paris saw David Ginola score for the home side, while Ian Wright bagged a crucial away goal for Arsenal. Kevin Campbell scored the only goal of the second leg at Highbury, and George Graham’s team went on to beat Italian side Parma in the final.
The first-ever Champions League meeting between Arsenal & Paris Saint-Germain came in the group stage of the 2016/17 campaign. Edinson Cavani scored the opening goal in this fixture at the Emirates Stadium, just as he did in the first leg at the Parc des Princes. Olivier Giroud restored parity on the cusp of half-time, converting his penalty kick after Alexis Sánchez was adjudged to have been brought down in the area. In the second half, Marco Verratti & Alex Iwobi each put the ball in their own net, and the contest ended 2-2.
