FA Cup Semi-Finals – David vs. Goliath Battles Pit Manchester Rivals Against Underdogs at Wembley Stadium

There can be no denying the allure of the FA Cup. The name alone is synonymous around the world with club football, and the world’s oldest football competition is as iconic as it gets when we get to the semi-finals, the stakes are as high as they can be.

The rush for FA Cup semi-final tickets is always immense. Still, in 2022-23 this is, even more the case, as this season sees both Manchester City and Manchester United take on so-called lesser opposition, with a view to the local rivals looking to meet at what would be a phenomenal FA Cup final pairing.

Manchester City vs Sheffield United – Saturday 22nd April – 16:45

The fun starts with a massive clash between Premier League title holders Man City and Championship promotion chasers Sheffield United.

On the face of it, this should be a fairly straightforward clash for Pep Guardiola’s men, but the FA Cup is nothing if not unpredictable. Paul Heckingbottom’s team may be in the second tier, but they are certainly used to winning this season.

The Blades, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2020-21, sit in second place in the EFL Championship and are, of course, going to be focused heavily on getting back to the top tier. However, that doesn’t mean they’ll take this game lightly, though it is worth remembering that Man City thumped table-topping Burnley 6-0 in the last round.

Guardiola will surely put out a team with a smattering of second-string additions, and he will undoubtedly expect his team to book their place in the FA Cup Final. It’s worth noting that Manchester City have lost in each of the past three FA Cup semi-finals they’ve taken part in, with defeats against Chelsea twice and Liverpool last time around.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United – Sunday 23rd April – 16:30

In what is perhaps a more balanced FA Cup semi-final, high-flying Brighton take on a Man United side that have already won the EFL Cup this season.

When Graham Potter left the Seagulls to join Chelsea, there would have been plenty of Albion fans who would have been concerned about how their south-coast side would fair, but under Italian boss Roberto De Zerbi they have consolidated nicely and sit in a healthy position of seventh in the Premier League table, with games in hand over their nearest rivals.

Manchester United have shown real improvement under Erik ten Hag and undoubtedly will be favourites for this mouthwatering clash at Wembley Stadium.
