Borussia Dortmund were relatively successful during the European Cup era, competing in three campaigns in the late 1950s and mid-1960s, finishing up in the Quarter-Final on one occasion and a Semi-Final in 1963/64 when they lost to eventual winners Inter Milan.

They then failed to qualify for the tournament for over thirty years but came back with a bang. In 1995/96, they made it through a tough group before losing to Ajax in the Quarter-Finals, and in 1996/97 they secured their maiden title.

A Semi-Final win over Manchester United was particularly impressive, and they then defeated Juventus in the final, a game that they were very much not favourites to emerge victorious.

The following season they were felled at the Semi-Final stage, but a pattern had formed that showed that Borussia Dortmund were among the most consistent performers in Europe, though they then flattered to deceive and were often unsuccessful in securing a spot in the competition.

The arrival of Jurgen Klopp in 2008 was a game changer for the club, he led the club to two Bundesliga titles, and in 2012/13, Borussia Dortmund defeated Real Madrid in the Semi-Final to set up a mouthwatering final with Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

The Wembley occasions lived up to the hype, and Dortmund failed to prevent Arjen Robben from scoring a late winner to secure a 2-1 victory for Bayern Munich.

Juventus first qualified for the European Cup in 1958/59, and in that season and their next campaign in 1960/61, they failed to get through the Preliminary Round but in 1961/62, they pushed on to the Quarter-Finals, where they lost to Real Madrid after a playoff.

A Semi-Final finish was secured in 1967/68 before they made it through to their first European Cup Final in 1973 when they went up against an all-conquering Ajax side jam-packed with talents.

La Vecchia Signora fell behind to a Johnny Rep goal after just five minutes and failed to get back in the game and thus lost in Belgrade.

A decade later, they faced SV Hamburger in another European Cup Final, and once again, an early goal got the better of them; this time, that came from Felix Magath in Athens to clinch a 1-0 win for the Germans.

Two years later, they got to another European Cup Final, and they won by a single goal from Michel Platini against Liverpool, a game sadly more well-remembered for the Heysel Stadium disaster that played out that evening in 1985.

In 1995/96, they once again won the tournament, this time post-rebranding, with their UEFA Champions League success coming against Ajax, with the win secured via penalties.

Juventus then lost back-to-back finals against Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, and they actually subsequently lost further finals in 2003, against AC Milan, in 2015, against FC Barcelona, and in 2017, against Real Madrid.

Borussia Dortmund vs Juventus FC Head-to-Head

These two sides have met on a number of occasions in European action, and the first meeting came in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup Final.

The two-legged occasion was won comprehensively by the Turin-based side. They won 3-1 in Dortmund with Roberto Baggio scoring twice, and in the return, his namesake Dino scored a brace in a 3-0 victory that completed a stunning 6-1 aggregate success.

In 1995/96, the two teams were drawn into the same group, and Juventus again won in Germany 3-1, goals from Michele Padovano, Alessandro Del Piero, and Antonio Conte doing the damage.

In the return fixture, the honours were shared after an entertaining 2-2 draw, with both teams progressing to the next phase.

In 1997 they met in the UEFA Champions League Final, and Juventus were very much the side to beat. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side, however, played with no fear, and Karl-Heinz Riedle scored twice in five first-half minutes to put Die Borussen in control.

Del Piero came on off the bench at half-time and scored to cut the deficit, but just a few minutes later, Lars Ricken, himself also a substitute who had only been on the pitch for a minute, lobbed keeper Angelo Peruzzi to secure a memorable win and got their hands on the famous trophy.

In 2014/15, Juventus overcame Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16, winning 2-1 at home before collecting a superb 3-0 win in Germany with Carlos Tevez scoring twice and Alvaro Morata also netting.
