As for the game itself, this is one hell of a clash. Two sides with proven trophy-winning credentials battling it out at the iconic Signal Iduna Park stadium with so much to play for.

Borussia Dortmund first appeared in this tournament in 1956/57 when they were eliminated by Manchester United in the First Round, though Die Borussen certainly got their revenge for that loss some years later.

The following season a Quarter-Final exit to AC Milan was followed by a Semi-Final loss to their San Siro co-hosts Inter, in 1963/64, the year that the Nerazzurri first won the European Cup.

Dortmund then sat out the competition for a period of over thirty years due to their lengthy failure at the domestic level. This was brought to an end by successful coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who also worked wonders in charge of Bayern Munich.

Under Hitzfeld, Borussia Dortmund won back-to-back Bundesliga championships in 1995 and 1996, and their appearance in the UEFA Champions League the season after that second domestic title proved decisive.

After a strong group phase where they picked up four wins from six and wins over French side Auxerre and Manchester United (there’s that revenge we mentioned earlier), they faced Juventus in Bern, Switzerland.

Hitzfeld’s side were by no means favourites to beat the Italian giants, but they did so with relative ease. Karl-Heinz Riedle scored a first-half brace before Alessandro Del Piero came off the bench at half-time to reduce the arrears, but Juventus were then blown out of the water by a Lars Ricken lob that completed a 3-1 win.

Hitzfeld’s side then got to the Semi-Finals the following season, where they lost out to Real Madrid before he left for the Allianz Arena, which coincided with an up-and-down period for the next five years before Mathias Sammer helped Dortmund to another title in 2001.

The club then missed out on UEFA Champions League action from 2003/04 to 2010/11, when Jurgen Klopp’s magic started to filter through.

The German boss, who went on to manage Liverpool, brought back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012, and they fought their way to the UEFA Champions League Final in 2012/13, where they would face Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium in an eagerly anticipated game.

The first half ended goalless though Dortmund dominated, and then Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic put Die Bayern ahead after an hour before a foul by Brazilian defender Dante on Marco Reus led to Ilkay Gundogan equalizing.

Then with a minute of normal time left, Arjen Robben was released by Franck Riberty, and the Dutch winger fired home to win the game for Jupp Heynckes’ side.

Manchester United have had real highs and incredible lows in both the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League. Under Sir Matt Busby, a marvelous Old Trafford side became the first English team to win the competition in 1968.

They did so by beating Benfica 4-1, after extra time, at Wembley Stadium. The following season they looked good value to retain the competition before they were defeated by AC Milan in a hard-fought Semi-Final, with Denis Law finishing that campaign as the top scorer in the competition.

After a lengthy period away from the competition due to poor domestic form, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side got back into contention when they made their first appearance of the UEFA Champions League era in 1993/94.

In 1998/99, they faced Bayern Munich in the final, having been imperious in knockout wins over Italian sides Inter Milan and Juventus. Ferguson’s side looked dead and buried as the injury time board was held up. Mario Basler had scored for the German side early on, and Peter Schmeichel was thrown up for a David Beckham corner; such was the urgency of the situation.

Then history was made. Substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer both netted in injury time as Bayern Munich players collectively sunk to their knees in abject shock.

In 2008 Ferguson’s side won the title again by beating Chelsea on penalties in Moscow and then made the final in 2009, only to be played off the park by FC Barcelona in Rome.

In 2011 it was much the same, with Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona side once again proving far superior in a 3-1 victory at Wembley. Since Ferguson retired from his position Manchester United have not come close to lifting the trophy again, something the current manager will be looking to rectify.

Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester United Head-to-Head

The first meeting between these two esteemed sides took place in the First Round of the 1956/57 European Cup. Manchester United won the first leg 3-2, and the return leg ended goalless, leading to the English side edging through to the next round.

In their next meeting, things were a little more clear-cut. They faced each other in the 1964/65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Second Round. Sir Bobby Charlton scored a hat-trick, while George Best and Denis Law also found the back of the net in a 6-1 mauling in Dortmund.

The second leg resulted in a 4-0 win to complete a monumental 10-1 aggregate success.

Their third meeting was in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals in 1996/97. The first leg was won by Dortmund thanks to a goal from Rene Tretschok, a lead that Sir Alex Ferguson may well have thought his side could overcome at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately, United found themselves a goal down on the night after just eight minutes when Lars Ricken found the back of the net, resulting in the Premier League side having a mountain to climb, one they failed to scale.
