Borussia Dortmund are undeniably one of the most decorated clubs in European football, having reached the Champions League Final on no fewer than three occasions.

Die Borussen defeated Juventus, 3-1, in the 1997 final for what was their first UCL title, though their next two appearances in the showpiece match would both end on a more sombre note. Dortmund were beaten by Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley Stadium, and 11 years later Real Madrid were victorious at the same venue.

The first-ever competitive meeting between these teams took place in 2001 as they clashed in the Champions League qualifying rounds; Dortmund ran out 5-1 winners in the two-legged tie.

The clubs would next share a pitch in the 2012/13 Champions League Round of 16. They played out a 2-2 draw at the Donbas Arena before Dortmund claimed a 3-0 victory in the second leg at Signal Iduna Park. BVB went on to reach the Champions League final that season but narrowly lost out to rivals Bayern Munich.

Only in 2024/25 would these two sides reconvene in a UEFA competition, as Dortmund were drawn to play against Shakhtar in the newly-introduced Champions League league phase.
