However, Dortmund reasserted themselves in the game when Lars Ricken scored a wonderful third to clinch the victory.

Borussia Dortmund reached the Semi-Finals the following season but then had to wait until 2012/13 to taste the experience of another final, this one coming at Wembley Stadium against old rivals Bayern Munich.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went behind to a Mario Mandzukic effort on the hour mark, but Ilkay Gundogan converted a penalty to level less than ten minutes later. The two teams were neck and neck before Arjen Robben scored a winner after 88 minutes.

Inter Milan have won the competition on three occasions, losing out on another three final attempts.

Their first successes came at the start of a very dominant era for the Nerazzurri, where they would arguably have been the most consistent side in Europe for an extended period.

In 1964 they beat Real Madrid 3-1, and the following year, they defeated Benfica before they lost finals in 1967 to Celtic and 1972 to Ajax.

A lengthy period of relative failure followed, which was broken by Jose Mourinho’s side in 2010, who easily saw off Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Final that year, Diego Milito scoring both goals in a comfortable 2-0 win.

2023 saw the San Siro side return to the final, where they were edged out by a talented Manchester City side, Rodri’s goal separating the two sides in Istanbul.

These two teams have met on two occasions in European action.

The first came in the 1963/64 season in the European Cup Semi-Finals. The two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Dortmund before Inter Milan eased past their opponents 2-0 in Italy, the great Sandro Mazzola scoring in both legs as well as netting twice in their final win over Real Madrid in Vienna.

The second set of meetings took place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, where Inter Milan won the home fixture 2-0. The home match for Dortmund saw the visitors take a two-goal lead through Lautaro Martinez and Matias Vecino before they mounted a strong comeback.

Two goals from Moroccan Achraf Hakimi and another from Julian Brandt completed a fine recovery win for Dortmund.
