It would be fair to say that Borussia Dortmund have spent a large portion of its history in the shadow of arch-rivals Bayern Munich, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t won their fair share of top honours, both at home and abroad.

They took part in the European Cup for the first time in 1955/56, and by their third campaign, in 1963/64, they made it through to their first Semi-Final, which they lost to Inter Milan.

They then spent thirty years away from the competition, failing to qualify during something of a domestic slump, but after reaching the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals in 1995/96 (losing to Ajax), they won their first title the following year.

On that occasion, they saw off Manchester United in the Semi-Finals before a brace from Karl-Heinz Riedle helped Die Borussen to overcome Juventus in Bern, Switzerland.

Their second final is one they would perhaps rather forget about, seeing as that occasion saw Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated by Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium, thanks to an Arjen Robben winner late on.

Real Sociedad’s first bow in the competition came in 1981/82 after their maiden La Liga title when they were knocked out in the First Round. The following season, after another Spanish championship, they went on a strong run, only to lose to Hamburger SV in the Semi-Finals.

The San Sebastian side’s first UEFA Champions League campaign came in 2003/04 when they got through a tough group that included Juventus, Galatasaray, and Olympiacos, to then lose to Lyon in the Round of 16.

A further campaign arrived a decade later, resulting in Sociedad finishing bottom of their group with just one point to show for their efforts, and 2023/24 led to only the club’s third UEFA Champions League adventure to date.

In Spain, Isak matured into a very capable performer, scoring 44 goals in 132 games before joining English Premier League side Newcastle United in 2022.
