Borussia Dortmund have a fairly strong record in Europe, albeit tinged with pockets of real heartache. In 1956/57, the German outfit qualified for the European Cup for the first time, and in 1963/64, they reached the semi-finals before losing to Inter Milan. In 1996/97, under Ottmar Hitzfeld, Die Borussen side defeated Manchester United to reach the Champions League Final, where they were the underdogs but still managed to see off the challenge of a star-studded Juventus team in Munich.

Since then Dortmund have reached the Champions League Final no fewer than twice more, but ultimately lost on both occasions. BVB were beaten by Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium in 2013, and 11 years later they lost to Real Madrid at the same venue.

As Portugal’s ‘third’ team, Sporting CP certainly lag behind their Primeira Liga rivals when it comes to their respective European records, as both Benfica and FC Porto have previously won UEFA’s premier club competition, whereas the best Sporting have managed is a quarter-final finish in the 1982/83 European Cup.
