About Borussia Dortmund vs AS Roma Tickets 2025/26

Both Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma have made significant impacts on the European Cup and its successor, the UEFA Champions League.

Dortmund, up until 2023, had achieved Bundesliga success in a sporadic fashion. Proving effective in the mid-1950s, earning them their first entry to the European Cup and then the mid-1990s and early 2000s, and then once again, during Jurgen Klopp’s time in charge, in the 2010s.

That has meant that Die Borussen have been involved in European Cup and UEFA Champions League action in fits and starts.

Their first campaign, in 1956/57, was brought to an end in the First Round by Manchester United, and the following season, they lost in the next round to AC Milan. 1963/64 saw Borussia Dortmund reach the Semi-Finals before losing to eventual winners Inter Milan.

The following season saw them win their first European title, beating Liverpool in the final of the UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965/66.

The club experienced relegation from the Bundesliga in 1972, and it wasn’t until 1991/92, when they finished as runners-up in the competition, that Dortmund were back on the map again.

With Ottmar Hitzfeld in charge, Dortmund won back-to-back German titles in 1994/95 and 1995/96, and in 1996/97, they won their first UEFA Champions League title by beating Juventus 3-1 in the final.

That achievement was, in some ways, overshadowed by their even more impressive Semi-Final victory over Manchester United.

The following season Borussia Dortmund got to the Semi-Final again, this time losing to Real Madrid 2-0 on aggregate, having beaten Bayern Munich in the Quarter-Finals.

Hitzfeld left to take over at Bayern Munich, leading to a lull until Mattias Sammer led the club to another Bundesliga title in 2001/02.

Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in 2008 led to a marked period of domination. The Westfalenstadion side won the Bundesliga in 2010/11 and 2011/12 and finished second in each of the next two seasons.

In the UEFA Champions League, they met Bayern Munich in an all-German final at Wembley Stadium, with the Bavarian side running out 2-1 winners courtesy of a late Arjen Robben winner.

Between 2013 and 2023, Dortmund failed to make much of an impact in Europe, something the club will be keen to rectify in the very near future.

AS Roma’s European record is something of a disappointment.

It started out very well indeed when they reached the final of the European Cup in their first campaign. They beat IFK Goteborg, CSKA Sofia, Berliner Dynamo, and Dundee United to set up a final with Liverpool.

The final actually took place in AS Roma’s home stadium at Stadio Olimpico, where they drew 1-1 before losing on penalties, with Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobelaar famously putting off the Italian side’s players in the shoot-out, leading to both Bruno Conti and Francesco Graziani missing their efforts.

In 2006/07, AS Roma faced Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals, having impressed in the tournament up to that point.

The Italian side picked up a useful 2-1 win at home before they were absolutely dismantled at Old Trafford. Both Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice each, and additional goals from Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney, and Patrice Evra completed a miserable night for the Giallorossi, who ended up losing 7-1 on the night and 8-3 on aggregate.

The same two teams met in the Quarter-Finals the following season, and Manchester United once again ran out winners, albeit this time Roma only suffered a 3-0 aggregate loss.

In 2017/18, AS Roma got to the Semi-Finals of the competition, where they met Liverpool under boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Anfield side won the first leg by a thumping 5-2 margin and did their best to make up for that deficit at home, but their eventual 4-2 win was not enough to turn things around.
